Oldham investment
Electricity North West is embarking on the largest ever investment in the North West’s power network, investing over £2bn between 2023 and 2028 – including a £32m programme of improvements for Greater Manchester.

In what is a significant investment which will transform the 132,000-volt electricity infrastructure throughout Oldham and the surrounding areas, more than 42,000 homes and businesses will benefit from the new electricity supply which will see older, oil filled cables replaced with more modern cables.
- This £13m investment will significantly enhance the reliability and environmental performance of Oldham’s electricity infrastructure and eliminate oil leakage risks
- The work will take place from July 2025 and is scheduled to be completed in November 2026
- The project supports Electricity North West’s commitment to removing oil-filled cables from the network by 2040, supporting clean growth and net zero targets
- We are working closely with Oldham Council to coordinate works and minimise disruption
- Road closures and diversions are necessary but will be carefully planned and communicated in advance in collaboration with local authorities
- There are no planned supply interruptions as part of this project and your power supply should be maintained throughout this project.
- We are committed to keeping residents, businesses, and commuters informed every step of the way.
Team 1 engineers will start work on Tuesday 1st July 2025, at Electricity North West's Whitegate Depot and work will take approximately 5 weeks and then progress to Gateway Crescent.
Team 1 will carry out work at the following:
- Gateway Crescent (05/08/25 for approximately 5 days
- Long Lane (16/08/25 for approximately 5 weeks with multi way traffic lights
- Turf Lane (18/09/25 for approximately 6 weeks with multi way traffic lights

- Gateway Crescent (05/08/25)
Road with Parking Suspensions:
- Long Lane (16/08/25)
Team 2 engineers will start work on Tuesday 1st July 2025, at Drury Lane and work will take approximately 4 weeks and then progress to Manchester Road.
Team 2 will carry out work at the following:
- Drury Lane (01/07/25 for approximately 4 weeks with multi way traffic lights
- Manchester Road (28/07/25 for approximately 4 weeks with multi way traffic lights
£13m investment to enhance Oldham power network
A record investment is to be made in Oldham with £13m being spent upgrading the power network. Power network operator Electricity North West will carry out the work which will see 6km of underground cables replaced.
Start date confirmed for £13m Oldham investment
A start date has been confirmed for a major £13m electrical project taking place across Oldham. One team of engineers will start work within the grounds of Electricity North West's Whitegate depot on July 1st for approximately five weeks before progressing on to Gateway Crescent and Long Lane. A second team will start on Drury Lane before progressing to Manchester Road.
