Powering our communities fund

Powering our communities fund

Putting community and local energy at the heart of our communities

We are pleased to be able to invite applications for funding from projects that deliver the aim of putting community and local energy at the heart of communities and in particular can demonstrate how they can contribute to the delivery of one of the following priorities:

  • Engaging communities in energy issues, particularly energy efficiency
  • Supporting vulnerable customers and or reducing fuel poverty in our communities
  • Investigating or delivering new ways of working, fit for a smart, flexible low carbon grid

Applications will be accepted for any type of organisation including community benefit societies, industrial provident societies, charities, schools or local authorities as long as they can demonstrate the community involvement or local benefit of their project.

The funding can be used to support a wide range of activities including producing materials to promote initiatives, supporting staff time or technical expertise, buying equipment or researching a new approach or business model.

We will award successful projects with between £1,000 and £15,000 and the project will need a bank account to accept the funding.  There is up to £75,000 available to support projects.

The majority of the project activity needs to be located within our area and details of local authority areas this includes are in the call criteria document.

Deadline for applications

The deadline for submissions is midnight on Wednesday 19th December.

To apply please download the criteria document and complete the online application form here.  The form needs to be completed in one go as changes can't be made to it.  To help you prepare your answers you can download a copy of the questions below to see what you will asked in advance.

Grants will be awarded by February 2019.  It is expected projects will start soon after the grant is awarded and last for no more than about a year from the start date.

If you have any questions about the process or the criteria please contact us at

The successful projects will be expected to take part in a case study for use in our communications about the project.

We see this as an opportunity to build ongoing relationships with organisations and explore further opportunities to provide support.
