Storm Desmond

Storm Desmond

On 6 December 2015, the fourth of the Met Office's newly-named storms - Storm Desmond - hit the North West. A month's worth of rain fell in just 24 hours, the highest level of rainfall ever recorded in the UK.

Engineers worked around the clock responding to the biggest incident we had ever dealt with.

The understanding shown by customers in the worst hit areas was incredible to see in the face of such a devastating flood.

Defences that were built to withstand '1-in-100 year' floods protected supplies to 110,000 properties in Kendal and Carlisle, although a number of smaller substations were flooded in Carlisle cutting power to 13,000 properties.

The same level of defences were breached in Lancaster when the River Lune overflowed, cutting power to 55,000 properties in Lancaster, Morecambe and the surrounding area.
